πŸ‘‹ Hi Everyone! I hope everyone in their running era is hitting their goals and kudos for showing up!

If you are using Strava for tracking you’ve probably shared more than just your progress. Strava if not configured by default shows everything to the public like routes (Start Points and End Points), start times. These are data that can help people determine your patterns and habits. In this post let’s go through setting our privacy settings in Strava.

πŸ—’ Tutorial Proper

  1. Go to your Strava Settings > Privacy Controls
  2. Starting with the Profile Page, configure if you want everyone can view your Profile. This will show all of the aggregated statistics that you have and your recent activities.
  3. Next is Activities, here you can configure how you want your activities to be posted by default.
  4. Next is Group Activities. This is for those activities wherein you are having the activities with other Strava users.
  5. Flybys are those trendy Strava videos wherein people can see the route you took overlayed on a 3D Map.
  6. Local Legends, this is for the top athletes. If you want to be seen in the leaderboards choose Everyone. If you are not in the top list, your effort and histogram is hidden by default.
  7. Mentions, this allows other users to tag you in posts and comments.
  8. Map Visibility, I believe that this is one of the most important settings.
    Static Badge
    1. Specific Address - Setting this around your home, would help mask where your house is specially if you start your activities right outside your house.
    2. Start and End Points - Another setting that can be use is to hide the first and last 200m of your activity. This is what I personally use πŸ‘.
    3. Hide Map (COMPLETELY)
  9. Hidden Details, here you can set specific parameters such as Start Time, Pace, Calories, Power, and Heart Rate from the activities you share to the feed.
  10. Aggregated Data Usage and Public Photos on Routes

That’s it. You have now configured your privacy settings in Strava! Always remember β€œPrivacy is an inherent human right, and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect.” ― Bruce Schneier (2009)
